Fuel Filter Location

Hey, I have a 91 toyota celica st, 1.6L I was wondering if any one knows where on my car I can find my fuel filter? Im having a hesitation problem, as my car approaches 3000 rpm my car hesitates and has trouble building up. It affects my speed pick up also because it wont pick up speed properly until about 5000 rpms which is close to redline. Any other suggestions , I'm guessing my fuel filter may be dirty. Thanx

welcome to the world of the at180 chasis (st coup body). the fuel filter is on the driver side right over the wheel and directly below the master cylinder by the fire wall. it is extremely hard to reach. the top you need to move the intake as in take it all the way off. disconnect it from the air box and the intake manifold. also be sure to remove the vacume line close to the manifol on the bottum side of the intake tube before you pull it all the way out. it is also easier if you remove the fuel purge canister which is that big black cylidrical thing that is directly in the way of being able to see let alone remove the fuel filter. you do need to put the car up in the air by the way. just the front though. if I remember correctly the wiring harness had to be moved around a little as well. the wrench sizes you should need to disconnect the top line are 17mm and 19mm. this is not a fun task it will be very crampt where you have to work. after you disconnect the top line... the fun starts. you get to crawl under the car anr reach around all kinds of crap to get to the bottum of the filter. it will be very hard to reach up to it as well as loosen it from the metal line. be careful not to twist the line and break it or crimp it shut. after that it gets even worse. place the fuel filter in place and screw it into the metal line on the bottum. get it as tight as possible. then reattach the fuel filter and its holder in its place. reattach the top line then put everything back in its place. after everything is reassembled, strat the car. check for leaks and if it leaks check the bottum first because it will be the one most likely to leak. leave the car in the air until after you seal any leaks if you have them. whether that is what is causing your problem i can't really say. my performance was suffering, but not that bad. you should check for clogged injectors, clogged fuel rail, spark plugs and wires, make sure the pump is working properly, spray some throtlebody cleaner in the throtlebody, run some fuel injector cleaner and octane booster through. the at180 chasis is not that great to work on but once you learn it you should be fine.being the is front wheel drive it'll always be harder than a rear wheel because they gotta fit everything in the engine bay. good luck with the problem and if got any more questions lemme know.

I agree with cel7teen - fuel filter is a bear to replace. I did crimp the line and had to replace the gas line back to the tank. I replaced the original filter after I had 230k miles and honestly not much of a lasting improvement in performance. Given that the filter is a special order from the dealer I wonder how often they really need replacing.

Thanx

Thanx alot for all your help, im going to try it out and see if it works, i changed by spark plugs, wires and rotors already because i needed a new distributor, so all that is good hopefully between this and the fuel cleaner, octane booster, etc , things will work out.
