1983 celica gts has a 1990 toy pick up motor.

Hello

my friend has a 83 celica gts witha 1990 pick up motor.
  • the speed gauge is off. for example i was only going around 40 mph but it reads 50.
is this due to the change of motor.

also .
  • there was a smell. from the exsuast but i did not know where it was coming from .

men i got a head ache from the smell.

my friend is actually trying to sellit to me and i wanted to know if it is worth it.
  • he said that the power streering i sdi connected.
  • what ever that means. also the master cylinder was not working.
  • some leaks on the engine. bottom middle but not the top.
  • dash board is cracked.
  • paint needs some work
  • i really love this year
  • no ac.
dont know what else to watch out for.

* the speed gauge is off. for example i was only going around 40 mph but it reads 50.
Got nothing to do with engine, he probably change the tranny also.

* there was a smell. from the exsuast but i did not know where it was coming from.
You maybe breathing CO - carbon monoxide from exhaust leak.

*he said that the power streering i sdi connected.
No power steering on a power steering rack means you can't steer the car to get out of and accident.

*what ever that means. also the master cylinder was not working.
Brake master cylinder not working? Ok you can steer and you can't stop. Nice car.

You sure your friend don't want to kill you? Carbon Monoxide, no steering, no brake, 100% death trap.

Depends on how mechanically minded you are and how cheap it is.
All those (many) faults are not hard to rectify if you are handy with spanners and can spend some time on it.
But they definitely do need fixing before you drive it.

Exactly

And Carbon Monoxide is tasteless and odorless, so it's not what you smell.

It's probably running rich. You're most likely smelling unburned HCs.
Or possibly the cat is bad.
The engine is a 22RE.

No pwr steering isn't that bad either, unless you have stick arms.
I've disconnected my pwr steering on several cars and had no problems driving.
Once you get moving it's fine.
The only time it's really hard to steer is when you are stopped.

Master cylinder could also be the clutch.
Is it a manual?
