timing marks

Does anyone have a good picture of the timing marks when installing a new belt. I think mine are lined up but just not working right. I have the crank pulley mark to 0 and the cam sprocket has the small hole straight up.
Maybe a picture would help, looked at the one on BGB but still not sure about where the cam should be.

Also noticed that there is a little bump on the bearing cap, is this the timing mark that the cam should line up with?

This is on the 2.2 91 Celica

Thanks, Kerwin

If a 5SFE engine, align the hole in the cam pulley up with the bump in the cam bearing cap. You should be able to see the bump through the hole. Align the crank at 0 degrees.

Install belt, release tensioner, then turn engine by hand 2-times CW and recheck the marks. If the marks are off, repeat the process.

Thanks for the info, that is what I thought but wanted more another opinon.
I know I was off before but now have taken it apart several times and am still off. I was off by on tooth, so took it apart and moved one tooth on the cam gear, put it back together and am still off. Back to take the belt off again and try once more

Tdc

Hey...just because the crank pully/harmonic balancer is pointing to zero degrees...doesn't mean it's at Top dead center.

You have to find tdc of the first cylinder... and to do this, you must figure out which cylinder is about to fire.

Look in your service manual, and locate the #1 cylinder. Remove the spark plug for this cylinder. (this next step you might have to do a couple times until you find the right spot...) crank the pully around until it hits Zero. At this point, take a screw driver, very very very gently stick it in the spark plug hole. If your screw driver instantly hits the piston inside, then you're at TDC for the #1 cylinder. (if you want to tune it further for mor accuracy, then read up on how to use a degree wheel)

Now, one issue you might have (depending on if you had to remove your distributor during the change or not...i'm not sure on your engine)... is that before you remove the distributor, you're supposed to mark exactly where your distributor is pointing when the engine is at TDC. During re-assembly, you'll have to feed the gear at the end of the distributor back into place and make sure the dist is pointing to the spot it was prior to removal.

If you didn't mark this spot prior to removal, then you should read up on installing a new distributor (you don't actually have to install a "new" one...but that will tell you how to possition the distributor correctly.). Also...to get the dist close, look at the distributor cap...and follow the #1 spark plug cable to the point where it enters the cap. The distributor should be pointing to this wire when the engine is at TDC.

hope this helps!
