20r engine

friend of mine gave me an old toyota 20 r engine, but need points style distributor with vac advance for it. Need to know what years to look for at junkyard. Will 22r dist work with carb? I've heard they don't have vac. advance if off of fi engine. Would convert to electronic if it would work. Need to know how to wire ignitor up if I convert to newer dist. Thanks

The carburated 22R distributor will bolt right in, and it does have vacuum advance except for EFI models. I think you should look at a wiring schematic before doing the swap, though, to be sure you have the right wiring and parts. It will perform better too.

Not sure about the dizzy body but the internals (ie where the points or reluctor are) can be swap between the 20R and early 22R distributor.
Not sure about late model 22R distributor.

I have some PDF files for 18R/20R/22R distributor wiring diagrams that I made when I converted my points style 18R distributor to electronic ignition (but still with carbs).

Look for ei.pdf and points.pdf .

Yes, the whole body will swap directly. As another bit of useless info, the 22R distributor internals (but not the housing) will fit directly into a 3TC distributor.

I've got 13T-U Electronic Ignition internals in my 18R-GU dizzy
Pretty much the entire T and R families can have their internals swapped around, even though the dizzy bodies differ.
