I've had a cold air for a while now. I was gonna try to sell my Celica and buy something turbo'd, but I thought this would be more fun. I need good parts that are cost efficient. i.e., I'm a college student and don't have a lot of extra money :-( Would you reccomend any particular brands? My goal is to hit at least 200hp
You will have a hard time reaching that goal given the car you have....
You will at least need forced induction, either a supercharger or turbo, and even then it won't be anywhere close to 200hp, at the wheels or crank. Forced induction is by no means affordable. The automatic transmission will limit what you can achieve, considering the high amount of drivetrain loss. A more realistic approach would be the 2ZZ-GE from the Celica GT-S and 6-speed manual transmission.
There is no such thing as fast and cheap. I'd recommend that you save up until you can afford such a setup or an engine swap.
It would probably be easier to start out with a GT-S instead. Until then keep saving up.
For conversations sake, 200whp is not easily attainable on the 2ZZ-GE either, unless you go forced induction. It's almost impossible if you stick with the naturally aspirated route.
If i were to swap trannies and go with a 5 speed (or even a 6 speed if it'll link up) would it be possible to hit 170? I could always rebuild my engine and turbo it
That would be more realistic, however, the internals of the 1ZZ-FE engine aren't the strongest and will need to be fortified before any serious boosting. But the costs go up considerably.
reading up on the post..... phatroyale is right to the wheels is going to be hard considering its not a stick to..... yea but that cold air intake and exhaust will do you good i got a cold air and it has been working great..
I'd be happy if I could push 170 or so. That seems easier, to add 30 horses instead of 60. In a nutshell, I want to get the most power I can out of my car. If I can keep it N/A that's great. I do also want to convert to a manual in the future. How hard would that be?

BTW phatroyale, thanks for that link. I didn't really understand the whole auto vs. manual thing in terms of power lost (http://www.superstang.com/horsepower.htm) Just for clarity, does that mean if I were to switch to a manual tranny I could get back roughly 5-7% of the power lost during the gear meshing?
