working with a 1984 celica gts (22RE)

I have about 6 inches of play in my steering wheel befor the wheels actually start to turn. is there some sort of adjustment for this somewhere?

is that normal for these cars? even if it is i dont like it!

This is way too much play. Suggest you jack up the front end of the car, remove the tires and investigate. Look at the steering rack ends, tie rods, etc to see if they are moving when the wheel is turning.

There is no adjustment for this, sounds like worn or loose parts.

yeah, X2! The steering on those cars should be nice and tight, good handling car when everything is as it should be.
Also check the steering box - the steering shaft and the pitman arm should move at the same time. If they don't, the steering box can be adjusted by tightening the slotted screw on the top, as per the service manual.
