It is a 22re engine. The only problem with mind was the timing chain. They are good strong engines and they last forever.

RWD Celicas and Supras have no particular vices.
Just the stuff common to almost everything of that era.

Rust
- under the doors,
- rear end of the hatch or trunk lid
- at the rear of the front fenders

Engine, gearbox and diff are long lasting but check for the usual signs of wear in a 20 year engine.
Generally they are bullet proof.
Most problems are easy to fix, replace or upgrade.

If you have a choice, try to get an 85 GT-S because it has IRS and shares many options with the Supra (better seats, instruments, etc).

Canada Still have mine

My 85 Celica is doing well, around 258,000km on the clock. The air-con just went this weekend, not the issue is shall I fix it. Not sure if its worth fixing a 20+ year old car. Get the car if you can find one in relatively good condition.

enjoy the pics: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Shop/9771/

hey, i was wondering what muffler you have. I am a noob when it comes to finding good car parts for good price, so i was wondering what it was and where you got it. also, the spoiler too.

Canada Muffler

The muffler is a off brand i picked up from a local muffler shop in Canada, Toronto. He sold it to me by saying the muffler has heavier gauge metal and is solid. He also custom piped from cat back, cuz, the original factory Celica mufflers are in one entire piece.

I have had crappy exhaust tips before which rusted out, so, at the same place, I asked for a chrome exhaust tip. They were able to source one, think its a Borla tip, but I destinctly remember the shop owner said, that chrome tip will outlast the entire muffler system. This chrome tip is pretty cool, it really makes the entire exhaust sound deep, I'll try to put sound clips on my site. I've tried the ANSA mufflers over 10 years ago, and only got 2-3 years out of them. very cheap. If I had the chance I would consider entire exhaust Borla, I hear the sound is pretty intense from the muffler, then again, thats going to be alot of money.

You really shouldn't have a problem with those cars.. they were built to last forever. The 22RE is as tough as nails. Just look out for rust, and leaks in the engine bay. At the most, I'd say it might need new suspension, new gaskets in the engine if there are leaks, and a little body work.. oh and might need some freon for the a/c.

So just a few things to check for. You shouldn't be disappointed.

Also one thing to note, check out the '89-'95 Toyota truck section and read the sticky threads for changing the timing chain, mods, maintenance, etc. It's very helpful and could save you $$$.
