I have an 86 GT. All of a sudden, the clutch just goes to the floor and back, but does not engage the clutch. I search the forums and am guessing I need to replace the Master and Slave. I was going to bleed the system first, but I can't seem to find the bleeder valve. The CHiltons is no help. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Here's where you need to start: The slave cylinder is bolted to the transmission bellhousing on the passenger's side of the car, and should be a 10mm wrench size.
Chances are you will only need to change the master cylinder, not the slave as well.
hey i kinda have the same problem, i have an 87 celica gt-s and when i push the clutch in it sticks. it doesnt want to come back up. i can start the car up but i cant move, since the clutch doesnt come up... any idea if its the same problem or if i need to replace something else???
my clutch pedal goes to the floor also, the resovoir was completely empty. I filled it up and was still able to shift gears and drive. A bit of fliuid leaking near the drivers side, clutch pedal. I'm sensing $300 for part and 3 hour labour to replace the clutch master cylinder. Will do it next year, storing the baby in a week.
Harvey.

You say it goes to the floor and back. So there is no loss in pressure of the clutch pedal? If the clutch pedal still goes down and back up like it always has then its not the master cylinder or slave cylinder. Its only those two when there is a leak or loss in pressure of the clutch pedal. In other words your pedal sticks to the floor and has to be manually pulled back up.
If the clutch pedal feel is normal then you need to replace the clutch. I forget which part exactly but nontheless, when replacing any part of the clutch you should always replace all parts. So buy yourself a clutch kit.

Even if you buy both a clutch slave cylinder and a clutch master cylinder the cost of parts really shouldn't be anything near $300. It should be about $80 for both. Installing is very easy. If you can get someone to help you out you'd save some money.
Shops around here charge $100 per hour. Some charge more. Time is money I guess.
Thats crazy. I'd have a lot more trouble affording a car if I lived up there. I don't know how you guys do it up there with those prices for just parts. Shouldn't buying parts from the US and getting it shipped to you be cheaper?
yes remember I'm quoting Canadian prices. We up hear for some reason pay more, like always.
parts below:
31410-20421 master cyl $196.10
31470-20191 cyl release $85.70 = $281.80 plus local taxes (canadian)
Is that dealer price??? That's obscene. Have you tried an aftermarket parts store as a comparison? If you do, ask if they carry the "Altrom" line of parts, it's often Toyota factory parts with the "toyota" name ground off.
I just had to replace the clutch slave in my 87 GT. $38. CDN. Not at Toyota. Bled it myself with a broom handle propped against the seat.
And believe me, if you clutch slave goes, you'll see the mess!
Even auto dealers use aftermarket parts. Many times, if they don't have the part in stock they'll just call an auto parts store they have an account with and order the part from them then jack up the price and say its their manufacturer's part. I replaced both my clutch master and slave cylinder for under $50.
