Gen5 ST184 Fuel Octane Rating

ST184 Octane Rating

I don't know which to go with. Obviously a Toyota publication claims priority but it's not a manual or anything, it's plainly an information booklet about the car. I've been using 87 Octane since I got the car in June. Any harm done? Or do I just get loss of performance. Hopefully I haven't hurt anything.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!
Rico

Have you checked the owners manual in the car ? 87 octane is fine for most "normal" cars manufactured in the last 2 decades or so....excluding some high performance engines, which the ST184 does not posess, unless swapped

That's not a bad idea. Unfortunately I don't own an owner's manual. Does someone own one and can someone provide this post with the answer..?

Octane is a knock inhibitor. General rule of thumb with a turbo engine is to put in the highest octane that you care to pay for. Mid grade at the least.

Octane stops detonation and preignition. Sometimes there audible (Knock) and sometimes there not. The toll is mostly taken on your bearings. They take the brunt of the damage. If you havent noticed a problem in the way it drives, I would say most likely no harm done, but if there has been detonation or preignition. There will be abnormal wear on your engine. The only way to check for this is to actually take out the rods and visually inspect the bearings.

If you can afford it, use 91 octane it's cheap insurance. Just my opinion.

The 5S-FE is fine with regular pump gas (87 octane). If you turn up the ignition timing you might want to go up to 89, 91, or 93 depending on what is available in your area.

Doh! I mistook it for a 3sgte. You're fine on 89.
