Gen5 Stalling at low speeds.

Hey everyone. Recently my 86 celica gt has started stalling. After more then half an hour of driving, while breaking for a light, or trying to accelerate after breaking, the check engine light flashes, my car sputters, idles around 400 or less for a few seconds, and then dies. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what the problem could be, or how I could fix it. (the dealership says the car is fine - holding up traffic while trying to get the car to started again says it is not.)

At higher speeds there is no problems really. Although, the check engine light will flash, and then go away, but that's when the problems start when I slow down.

I really don't know what it could be and would really like any help offered.

Thank you so much.

Troy Corbett

This is general procedure how to get a code:
  1. Make sure the battery voltage is at least 11 volts.
  2. Make sure the throttle valve is fully closed.
  3. Place the gear shift lever in Neutral or Park. Turn all accessories off.
  4. The engine should be at normal operating temperature.
  5. Using a paper clip, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector
  6. Turn the ignition switch ON, but do not start the engine. Read the diagnostic code by the counting the number of flashes of the malfunction indicator lamp.
  7. Codes will flash in numerical order. If no faults are stored, the lamp flashes continuously every 4 1/2 second. This is sometimes called the Normal or System Clear signal.
  8. After the diagnosis check, turn the ignition OFF and remove the paper clip.
  9. Compare the codes found to the applicable diagnostic code chart. If necessary, refer to the individual component tests in this section. If the component tests are OK, test the wire harness and connectors for shorts, opens and poor connections.

Normal system operation code (No. 1)

Code 4 is for coolant thermo sensor. On 2SE engine it is located on the air by- pass valve outlet below the throttle body (green connector).
-unplug the connector from it and check female terminals inside connector;
-check resistance between two terminals of the sensor at normal engine operation temp it must be about 300-200 ohms.
With engine at normal temperature (fans cycled on), turn ignition off, install the 200 ohm, 2 watt resistor into sensor's connector, secure it with electrical tape
Test drive the car, if problem is gone , replace the sensor.
Most sensors from 81 to 88 Toyota will work. The new one is about $20 in Autozone.

I went ahead and got that all taken care of, I figured I might as well replace it anyways. but the problem still is there. after half an hour of driving, the car starts idling funny. when in park it idles around 1000, while stop and go driving it boggs down to around 400-500 and then stalls outs.

You guys really know you stuff. any suggestions at all?

oh, and there are no new error codes coming up anymore.

thanks for all your help

I googled it and I came up with results that say it may be the ISC valve. could this be true?

The 86 celica does not have electronic idle speed control.
Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to erase the code and see if it reappears together with the problem.
If the code will not reappear then this was just an old code.
If code will reappear, then the wires between the sensor and ECU are needed to be checked.
I will double check the code description however, I am sure it is the same as for 86 camry with 2SFE.
I suggested to use resistor in order to eleminate sensor as a possible suspect.
