Hi, i have trouble code and it comes up p0171, which is lean condition.
i bought a scan tool today the actron cp9180. the tool has freeze frame and current sensor information.
this is what freeze frame had in it when the mil came on.
eng speed 2832 rpms.
calc load% 34.9
coolant 185f
iat 98f
st ftrm1 % 1.5
lt ftrm1 % 35.9
st ftrm3 %-100.6
lt ftrm3 %-100.6
vehicle speed 60 mph
fuel sys 1 closed
fuel system 2 n/a
the car does have cold air intake by injen but no other mods. this is what i have tried, cleaned the air filter, cleaned the maf sensor, changed bank 1 oxygen sensor. i have also run 5 or 6 bottles of the fuel injector cleaner, changed the gas cap, checked for vacuum leaks, which haven't found any leaks.
so none of this has fixed the problem, so why i got the scan tool, thought maybe i'd get some info or more and might help.
one thing i do wanna mention is when you crank the car the engine turns over 4 or more times before it will crank, which it has new plugs... so i have known something has been up just nothing had set the mil on. i think it might be in the cold air intake, to much air to little fuel=lean, but not enough fuel getting to it period means lean. so all i know now is could be pressure regulator, or fuel pump, or one of the injectors and of course that cold air intake. i do not have a stock intake unit to put on it but would be very nice.
oh yeah one other thing where to get a fuel pressure gauge that will hook up to this car?
also if anyone wants me to get a reading at idle i can get that also.
if anyone has any ideals or maybe the fix for this problem, please let me know!
The Injen intake is probably the cause of your lean condition. Many people have this problem. If you look where the MAFS is located in the stock intake tube, there are fins that guide the air across the MAFS. The Injen intake does not have these fins and causes the MAFS to read the airflow incorrectly. The only cold air intake with these fins is the TPR intake. TPR is out of business now, only about 25 intakes were produced.
i did a search about the lean condition and the injen cold air setup came up on that search. which also helped me believe that could be the cause. the info you gave me makes perfect sense.
If you have the stock airbox, try taking the Injen intake off and putting the stock airbox back on. Make sure you reset the ECU first to clear the CEL. If the CEL doesn't come back, you will know for sure what is causing it.
that is the problem don't have the stock airbox lol. which since you brought up resetting the ecu, if i do it the old way taking that battery cables off, takes like a half day for it to run right again. the only car i have ever had that happen to. if i delete the code with the scanner it's fine.
i wonder if it isn't the ecu itself, here is why! i unplugged the oxygen sensor on bank 1 cranked the car and let it run wouldn't throw a code, unplugged the second one didn't throw a code. now some more funny stuff, took gas cap off still nothing run fine, lol.
but here is the thing, bank1 sensor 2 no data retrieved for this sensor, but on other scan says it is fine, gives info for bank 1 sensor 1 and says ok. bank 1 sensor 2 says ok, but if pull up single one bank 1 sensor 2 nothing there!
other things i done tonite, went to the store pulled air filter off the car around 7 miles to the store and 7miles back, 14 total; no code and ran fine. i thought maybe for sure it would throw the p0171 code right off but didn't. i have only had the car few months now. i have put about 8k miles on it since. which when i bought it already had the cold air intake. the first day it threw a code, which was multi missfire, new spark plugs took care of that. oh also the fuel short trim fuel ratio looked better with filter off, so did the long trim, odd i think?! but back on topic.
about a week ago when it threw p0171 and po440 i believe was it, so far the p0440 code hasn't came back. which i seen a vacuum line was pinched, must have been that problem. the guy at autozone said change the oxygen sensor which i did just 2 days ago, 10 miles later if that when the mil light came back on, took it back and it said p0171.
so i hope maybe it's simple and i have over looked something. i do believe though it's in that cold air intake. this thing is driving me nutts, lol.
on newcelica.org there is a guy who came up with a way to modify the cold air intake system using a piece from the stock airbox so that the celica wont throw codes. its cold the BB mod.
also your idle air control valve (iacv) maybe the culprit

I used to see this a lot on Celicas with aftermarket intakes. The mass airflow sensor wasn't designed to operate behind an oiled filter, and is inclined to produce a lean code when it starts to collect gunk from the filter. About 80% of the time I would find all kinds of crap on the sensing wire up inside the sensor body. Sometimes I was able to clean it off with success, sometimes I had to replace it. Give it a look.
