Motor keeps coming out of timing

Alright, I've got a puzzling issue with my 92 celca ST.

When I bought the car it had trouble in low rpms, and just ran bad altogether. It kept on getting worse to, gradually until I couldn't make it up my driveway without it dying. I fixed this by moving the distributer all the way counterclockwise, and it ran perfectly for a while, then started getting worse and worse again. I cant figure it out, the timing belt isn't slipping or anything.

Anybody ran into this before? HELP!!!

Don't think its timing. Check your idle. Probably need to adjust the idle screw.

No, if it were the idle I would only have trouble at take off, and it wouldn't shake out that quick. My gas milege was cut in half as well, and an off idle screw wouldn't do that.

Any other ideas?

It sounds to me like you may have a faulty Mass Air Flow meter. Adjusting the timing via distributor may allow the engine to run properly for a short time with the air fuel settings the way they are. I would look up the specs on the amount of ohms the MAF should be at and test it with a multimeter. If thats not it try investigating the throttle position sensor. I really doubt the engine is slipping time like that... Under normal circumstances the engine will slip time one or two teeth once and then not again for a while. Or it will slip a great amount all at once leaving you with an engine that normally will not run at all. Let me know if I can be of anymore help.

^92 ST use 1.6L 4A-FE which is MAP base.
It is not a timing problem check everything else. Did you check timing with timing gun? Check ignition components. Pull ECU error code.

Good call, I accidently disregarded the "ST" Which brings me to the fact there could be an issue with the MAP sensor seeing how it does a similar job in a different way. This is an OBD 1 vehicle so there may be no codes. Checking ignition components is a good idea.
