Gen6 97 Celica losing engine Oil

Don't know if I can get some answers here.

I just bought a used celica '97. The body and interior are in great shape. Now the problem is, I am losing some engine oil. I drove the car across Canada (around 3000km's), and I found that I was losing oil quite noticibly. I am putting in 1L of motor oil for every 800km (roughly, maybe even more oil than that). Anyways, I can not see any dripping oil.

However that said, I have passed the emission testing in Ontario with flying colours, and no smoke was noted when I am reving up the car. I went to the Toyota dealer here, but they are telling me that they couldn't find a leak, and that it must be burning oil. However, I do have some doubts. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to burn that much oil and still pass the e-test? Anyone have any suggestions or have any clue what's going on?

What kind of emissions test is this? Yes it is possible to burn this much oil. Take a look at the spark plugs for signs of excess oil burning and check the PCV for problems. If burning this much oil the CAT and 02 sensors may eventually have problems.

Hey toyomoho

Thx for your response. I don't really know too much about cars, but the mechanic that looked at the car did say that there was some signs of excess oil burning from looking at the spark plugs. Anyways, what's PCV?

the emission test that I am talking about it a government regulated test, regulated by the government of Ontario. I don't know too much details about it, but I have been told that if I am burning that much oil, it would be very unlikely that I could pass the e-test.

Anyways, are there any repair strategies for that? What can I do to reduce the oil burn? Would an engine swap be the only solution to it?

Hey, I got some new info for my car. I have done a compression test and a leak down test on my engine. The compression values were all between 185-195 psi, and for the leakdown test, I had no more than 15% loss in pressure; And yet, I am still losing engine oil.

I went ahead and replace the rocker cover gasket and the distributor ring gasket because I did see some oil around the engine block. However, that done, I am still losing oil. but still, I don't see any oil dripping

Can someone give me some ideas of what to do next or what might be wrong?

It could be that some parts inside timing belt block (e.g. sealing around bearings) have been worn or broken.

is it a gt? or an st? if its a gt, the 5sfe motors burn oil when they are at slightly higher KMs. I have about 180k on my 94 and i slowly burn oil, about the same rate as yours. and i have the same problem with no smoke, or any thing visable showing. What i think it is, is that the valve seals are gone/going. I also have somethin wrong with my cylinder head though because every time i start my car it sounds like its supercharged coming from my head. On the other hand, if its an ST, it shouldnt be burning oil. My girlfriend also has a 94 with about 310xxxkm on it and it doesnt burn oil what so ever. Try pulling a plug and seeing if there is any oil ontop of your piston after you turn your car off and let it sit for a bit.

I have to say I really don't see your logic that if its a gt it could be burning oil and if its an st it shouldn't be burning oil. The fact is that either way it could be burning oil.

To go to the problem at hand, seeing how your loosing a lot of oil its probably a combination between seals and piston rings going bad. Since you don't know too much about cars I would just get someone to rebuild your engine or swap the engine.

Agreed - 5sfe in my '92 vert has 170,xxx miles on it and doesn't leak or burn any oil. Any engine can burn or leak, plain and simple...Only leak on my car is small leak from power steering line (common problem, and VERY minor for now). Engine and tranny are tight as drums .... so far
