Intake conundrum

So my 89 Celica's intake right now is basically the stock box with an old filter that feeds from under the hood because everything past the stock box is disconnected.

I can't just slap a filter on the end of the hose instead of the box because of the sensor on the box. I do, however, want some sort of short ram setup both for the growl and extra airflow. CAI is not an option as I drive through low water crossings from time to time.

Suggestions on how to go about this?

Disconnect the box from the Mass Air Flow Meter, purchase an adapter plate from ebay, slap a cone style filter on the end of it an call it a day. Thats what I did to my old celi.

The nuts for the sensor are a little funny to remove, If I remember correctly two of them are up inside of the top part of the box, but it can be removed.

Ahh okay...that makes sense. I've seen Ebay ads for intakes but I didn't know the sensor came off the top of the box. I know on my 3SFE Camrys the sensor is on one of the tubes instead of on the box.
