Canada big problem

k i was driving my 84 celica and all was good but suddenly the engine cut out and the rpm's dropped down below 1 and this would happen for a minute or 2 then she'll work properly again. then i turned her off that evening and the next morning she wouldn't start it just idels low then stalls. first i thought it was something with the fuel filter like it being really clogged or whatever but it's still pretty good. fuel pump is still working and i'm at a loss dunno what else it could be

I had similar problems when the EGR valve died on my 18R-G.
Effectively it created a big hole in the inlet manifold and the fuel mixture just leaned out.

I would guess that the coil has very weak spark or the ignition module is failing.
Pull the coil wire out of the dist. cap and hold it about 1 1/4 inch from the dist.cap hole and see if the spark jumps that far when a helper is turning the car over. if not, move it closer . If you have to hold it within 1/4 inch before the spark jumps, then I would replace the coil.

usually a module or igniter assy. will just go all the way out all at once. I think some of the parts stores like Auto Zone or Advance Auto used to have a way to test them but not sure if they still do that or not. If you have weak spark, I would change the coil, if no spark it could be coil, igniter, or pick-up coil in distributor. hard to tell sometimes without test parts available.

k so i completely replaced that coil, plus i popped a new started in cuz she wasn't turning over and she worked fine for about 5 minutes then it idled between 200 and 300 then it stalled and hasn't started yet. i been thinking i should replace the spark plug wires next but any other suggestions would be quite welcome
