USA Plz help 2001 gt celica engine problems

Ok this is the first time for me posting on any forums but i have had my celica since 30k miles and it now has 80k+ miles.
Some Back ground:
I missed some oil changes due to the fact that more than 1200 miles were highway miles put on one day of driving so changed the oil at 4000-5000 miles from the last oil change. But I usually change my oil at 3000 miles and i dont believe that is the problem. I have a cold air intake from AEM and have changed the flirter recently. I also have a bad syncro in my trams.
Problem:
My check engine light comes on and off randomly. I am not sure what code it is because every time i head to the Autozone the light is off and has been off for a while now. But when even I am driving at 70+ miles per hour and i drop from 5th gear to neutral the engine idles down rapidly and goes below the idle fights to stay idle and then dies completely. I have notice that when stopped at a light my car sometimes idles low the 750 rmps. Anyone have a clue to what might be going on? I asked a Toyota tech guy he said it is most likely the cam.

It doesn't matter if the light is on or not. If it's been coming on then there is a code stored and can still be scanned even if the light is off. You need to have the scan so we can start from there. I doubt it's the cam.

Ok so the check engine light finally came on again. I got it to a shot. The the check engine light is coming on because the cat is performing below threshold. I asked the clerk at autozone he says it could be because it is clogged up. So my plan is to straight pipe it. Does anyone one have any other suggestions on either gutting the cat or just placing a straight pipe through and has anyone one done a straight pipe.

I would not straight pipe it because the converter plays a big role in ecm operations. It's not like the old cars in the 70's, where you could just gut it or remove it. I would go to your local muffler shop and have them install a magnaflow converter or something equal to that.

well the ecu light is off now i just replaced the catalytic converter the Toyota guys were i live helped put it in under the warranty so that was nice but my car still wants to die after reaching 70 mph and then shifting to neutral. Yes an easy fix is not to shift to neutral but that doesnt solve my issue can anyone shed some light.

ummmmm, why would you shift to neutral @ 70 mph ??? Have you gotten the cel since replacing the cat ? If not, then don't worry about it....and leave the car in gear at speed !!!

i dont have a cel but i drop to neutral because i want to slow down gradually with out my engine eating gas. But I am worried that this could be a symptom to a lager problem.

Did they say there wasnt any issue with either of your o2 sensors.

Are you familiar with how to clean your Mass Air Flow Sensor?
The MAFs is the black unit that is bolted into your cold air intake with two tiny screws. What you do is unbolt it. Take it out. Use a couple q-tips and some water and whipe away any residue that is inside the unit. If you look down the spout of the unit you will find two tiny wires with resistors attached to them. They may be hard to find because you dont know where your looking, but they are there. Be gentle. Clean them with the q-tips. Also take a piece of cloth and rub the single bulb like thing that is on the side. Work the cloth back and forth till no dirt or grime is left.
