I was driving with an empty tank on the freeway and all of a sudden my engine lost power. Finally made it to the gas station, refueled and started the engine, it stalled, had to step on the gas a bit to keep it running at 1000 RPM.
Now the engine sputters at idle and stops. Had to play with the gas and Brake pedals (auto tranny) and shift it in neutral to keep it running.
Have replaced fuel filter (was partially clogged), Spark plugs and cables, and it still idles rough and dies.
When I start the car it runs strong, then check engine comes on and dies.
Ran autodiagnosis and it displays 1-3 (No signal from ignitor).
If I step on the gas the car revs up good.
As soon as I let go the engine dies. My gas consumption is not good either.
Probably because the car is trying to compensate for the problem.
My power steering is leaking badly.
Could it be that the timing belt was affected and jumped a tooth?
There is a momentary interruption between the igniter and distributor circuit. Check the wiring between the two components for loose or dirty wiring connectors and open or shorted wiring. Might also be a problem with the distributor.
Many Thanks for the suggestions.
Lastnight I tried to start and the car would not rev up at all.
Seems that the fuel pump theory has some sense.
Lucky for me I have a used pump and Throttle body cleaner.
Will hold off on the distributor as last resort and let you all know tonight.
Well, none of the fixes worked.
Changed pump and cleaned throttle body, if I step at accelerator midrange the engine won't rev up. Have to pump the gas pedal to maintain. As soon as released engine dies.
Help!!!
You chaged the fuel filter and the pump but what about your injectors? When you run your car with out gas all the particles and water deposits run directly through the pump, pump filter and then injectors. So, my recommendation is to remove your injectors and clean them, you also need to pass compressed air through the injectors; in addition, add any water remover commercially available to the tank (this will help to removed the water from the tank and fuel lines).
I had a similar problem with my 91 Celica 5S-FE, when I first looked under my hood I completely missed the problem. My problem was that my air hose was split in half and hanging on by a thread. So the split was after the air temp sensor and the engine was getting more air than it thought it was causing the mixture to be lean causing the engine the stall. Check it out. I just duct taped mine for now until Im able to replace it.
Replaced entire distributor for a remanufactured one.
Engine starts great, after 2 seconds shuts off.
If I step on the gas engine sputters and won't rev up.
Do I have a vacuum leak?
Don't sound like bad injectors, but then again I'm not an expert.
Did you look at your intake, your last post is sounding just like my problem look closely at your intake after your air filter. If you find a hole or a split at all you can duct tape it until your able to replace the hose. Does the engine seem unusually loud? Did your engine overheat at all when it had stalled on the highway???
You were worried your t-belt slipped, did you look into it? Check your timing, if you're off by only a hair, you'll run rough and stall.....
If you run it while its off too long, there is the possibility of damage to your valve train and other parts too. Get that checked. As listed above, clean your injectors out too, running a car out of gas will throw all kinds of gunk from the bottom of your fuel tank into them. Mine had that airhose issue too, duct tape is your friend there, I ran it taped for over a month without issue. Finally did get that replaced though.
When you replaced your plugs, did you order them up right? (correct firing order?) and make sure they were gapped properly. With the replacement distributor you listed, make sure all your wires are seated properly there too. (I know, it sounds like I'm calling you an idiot, but I'm not...even the best mechanics make mistakes, or forget simple things.)
Outside that, I don't know what else to tell you. Sounds like you've got some clues as to what it could be though....good luck!
Gave up.Brought in the help of a professional mechanic.
Actually the Timing Belt did slip and had to be repositioned. 3 Teeth to be exact.
He tapped the EGR and engine ran fine. Now diagnosing one of the Air sensors.
Thanks to all for the advise.
