gts engine

hello all

new to this site
but i've owned couple of celicas already the past 7 years
recently own an 86gts coupe

the engine started leaking oil
hi mileage

need recomendation on engine swap or rebuild shops
or just buy rebuild parts
i have rebuilt a 2.4 chrysler motor before simpler design i think compared to the toyotas and less electronics to hook up just looking at it

so just would like opinion on the best and cheapest route
i just want the car to run reliably
no performance stuff
it's pretty quick stock for a 20year old car

thanx

After looking around myself, I can tell you.....the rebuild option isn't cheap, unless you do it yourself. The replacement option is there, but you'll likely end up with a 3sfe (I think 2.0 motor) I tried risingsunmotors and some others, a "bolt in replacement" runs about 1k. (plus shipping) and they'll quote you the 2.0 instead of the 2.2 so keep that in mind.

I've gotten quotes for rebuilds anywhere from 2k and up. (if you have the money, its not THAT bad) If you can do it yourself, you can usually slide in under the 1k mark, depending on how much machining you need. I know the autoparts stores around here sell the "kit" for 600 bucks, although I'm not sure what all that includes. If you have the time and space, and the knowhow, I'd go for the "do it yourself" option personally.

You can find engines online though, if you want to just replace it. Sounds like you have some clue how to do the job yourself, which should help cut down on costs though. Good luck, and keep us posted.

The fastes and cheaper way to do that is just bying an used engine. I have past through that a few times already.
