Has anyone here ever had a frontal crash in a 90-93 or 94-97 Celica? How did it hold

I have always wanted a 1990-93 Toyota Celica, but my mother always said, "they are too small and dangerous". I know that the NHTSA crash test is good for the 90-93 models and excellent for the 94-97 models, but wanting some info from some that have actually had a frontal crash in one- particularly the 90-93 model. If so, how well did the structure (passenger cage) hold up? Were you injured? I am thinking that they are perfectly safe cars and wanting some "proof" to show her, so she will not worry if I do buy one.

I may just go for a 94-97... she likes those. I know they are a little larger and probably safer, but I personally like the looks of the 90-93s better.

Thanks in advance.

Friend of mine had a head on on the highway with his 90, totalled the car but he only got a broken leg and arm out of it, and that model didn't have an airbag. 93+ do I beleive. It has quite a bit or realestate between the front bumper and the passenger compared to say, a civic.

I have a '92 w/airbag (dunno if it was standard or option). My worry is not head on collision, so much as being t-boned by somebody in a big ol' pickum-up truck with their bumper about head high

My 90 GTS has an airbag as well. Not sure if it was "standard equipment"that year or not.

As far as survivability is concerned, no car is "totally safe" but construction wise, the Celica is just as good or better than other "similar" cars of that time frame.

Thanks for the replies guys. Not sure about in Canada, but here in the states, driverside airbag was standard on all Celicas starting with the 1990 model year. 1994 was the first year for the passenger side airbag. 1989 had neither.

Thanks again!

This is where she layed after the hit. The celica held up nicely.

I got bumped by a semi on the highway and that sent me into a wall sideways at 60mph. This was on I-70 in colorado. I'm getting another car. I'm fine no injury.
The bad part is that this gray car is mostly my dad's. He was pissed because we put in a new engine 6 months ago. I'm still happy that my white car is still kicking around.
