CEL code 71 EGR woes....Smog today

For the past year, Ive had a Check Engine light come on and off on my 91 Celica GT-S 2.2 liter.


The same thing happene on my 95 Corolla. Code 71.

On the Corolla, I pulled the fuse and reset the code before getting it smogged and it passed!


Im going to try it this morning on my Celica now.

Im going in for my smog this morning.

I changed the spark plugs and oil.

I changed the EGR Vacuum modulator because I accidently broke it changing some old hoses.

I sprayed carb cleaner inside the throttle body ports and stuck a paper clip back n forth. I noticed that of the three ports I have, 1 of them sprays freely when i spray carb cleaner inside. The other 2 backfire carb cleaner (as if its clogged or blocked off).

Wish me luck!!!!

Im going to pull the fuse for 30 seconds before i walk in.

Found the problems on both the Corolla and Celica

Passed smog.

bad vacuum modulator.

The one i replaced was no good.
