86 Celica GT still stalling..

Hi,

So I had posted on here a few months ago about my car stalling. Someone had mentioned the idle control valve or something like that but I've heard that there is no such thing on the model that I drive. The engine is se2 or something to that effect.

We then pulled the codes and it came up as the temperature sensor which was accurate so we changed it and the temperature gauge worked more. After that, we saw that the fan had stopped working. We still have not fixed it, however when we turn up the heat really high it doesn't get nearly as hot.

Yesterday we hollowed out that cat converter because there was mention of a plugged cat that can cause bucking and stalling. It still stalled after crazy idling, the engine light coming on, and lots of rocking. We pulled the codes again, and it still says that it is the temp. sensor.

The oil also gets black very quickly, I don't know if this is due to the stalling.

So I'm just wondering what this could be, I know I have to get the fan fixed of course but the errant idling doesn't seem to connect with that...I only stall pretty much when I'm about to step on the gas after being at a red light. When it bucks, I find it hard to accelerate no matter how hard I push down.

It would be great to get the problem solved. Thanks!

That sounds kinda similar to a problem I had when my air hose split. It also sounds like the sensor could be bad to but its odd because you said that you replaced it.

What to do?

Would I be able to fix that air hose myself? The last time I took it to a mechanic he told me he needed my old spark plugs and to know what cylinders they were in.. as I had just replaced them. So that was a complete waste of time. Would the broken air hose only cause a problem after long amounts of driving? That seems to be when most problems happen.

There is also a chance of the car being submerged before I bought it because the lower part of the jack handle or whatever it is called is rusted, tire iron, and floor pan rusted along with side panels.. could there be something wrong with my onboard computer also?

Thanks.

The coolant thermo sensor is NOT the engine temperature sending unit.
The Coolant sensor for ECU has green connector with two wires coming to it. Unplug the connector and to make sure that the female terminals inside were not pushed inside their cavities then:
When engine cold ,start the car and let it warm up---you may have to hold it at 2000 rpm to keep it running, then
unplug the connector, and stick there 1watt, 300 ohm resistor and start the engine --- if it runs fine now, the sensor needs to be changed.
The hole in the intake hose leans out the mixture , if it cracked, tape or replace it prior checking the sensor.http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/8...709940odz4.jpg

Thank you for your responses.

Which one would be the intake hose, the one that is attached to the air filter, the black one.. or is it something else?

Also the green connectors you are taking about, are you referring to the ones at the top?

I don't think it is a matter of the mixture being leaned out. When it stalls it smells strongly of gas and before we hollowed out the cat converter, it smelled like rotten eggs.

The intake hose is the one between the air flow meter and the throttle body.
The coolant sensor is located on the cast aluminum outlet for the heater hose in front of the throttle body below the engine lifting hook.
The coolant sensor is next to the cold start injector time switch, which has brown connector.

Australia THE Intake HOSE

Hi there,

My Celica just recently started doing the exact same thing.
The Intake hose has a spilt in it and now i'm going to replace it hopfully the problem is fixed. I'll let you know how it goes. If this does nothing i wouldn't know whats wrong with my car everything seems in perfect condition.

Good luck with the stalling problem!!

If you smell gas then it means it's running really rich and that the gas is not getting burn. Check you distributor and timing and replace plugs with some NGK Copper and make sure the gap them correctly.

Australia hmmm

So i guess it could be afew things i'd need to go over. When i first start up the car if it hasn't been driven in 3 days or more black smoke comes the exhaust. It worked fine until a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks, I'll have a check tomorrow in the Day light.
