I have a 88 Celica GTS with the 3sge , looking for power mods/tricks i can do . I race Figure 8 with my car and can't run a turbo . Any high compression pistons aftermarket? Good cams to run? injectors? ecm mods? Working on a budget . any advice would be appreciated. thanks
you can find new old stock with TRD for cams, I believe they have 2 or 3 stages of camshafts you can buy. A thinner headgasket wouldnt hurt. As far as pistons, thats hard to say. You may be looking for awhile. With modest power output you probably will not need to do anything with the injectors or fuel system. High flow exhaust headers respond well to this engine. Also eliminating the T-VIS intake manifold will help tremendously (have it hollowed or find a performance varient.) Larger throttle body, if you can find one. A valve job would help throttle response and squeeze a couple extra horsepower from it. Thats about all i can think of right now, let me know if I can further assist you.

thanks for the info , do you happen to know how much work it would take to install 2gen or 3gen cams in the 1gen head? i have a pair of 3gen cams with more lift sitting around and shimless lifter buckets. any ideas on that?
I'm not for sure if those camshafts would work. I've never opened up and gen 2 or a gen 3 3SGE. If you havent already, try advancing the timing as far as pump gas will allow. Other than that I'm nearly out of ideas.

Gen 1 cams are specific to head, I have dyno sheets to prove that gutting the TVIS or wiring it permanently open is a massive step backwards LEAVE IT FUNCTIONAL AND ALONE, milling the head is probably a big mistake as you have removed your squish areas, you can look for an unmachined head and fit gen 3 3sge pistons to bring your compression back up, look into an aftermarket ecu as you can gain power with a decent tune by getting your ignition timing spot on. You have a series 2 gen 1 3SGE with 295cc injectors so these will suffice. Don't bother finding a JDM ecu, they don't work that well. I would stay away from porting the head, the ports are already too big.
Look into getting some custom cams ground, and fit extractors (headers to US people) to gain a bit of flow in the top end.
My gen 1 3SGE makes 123hp at the wheels currently, with a POD filter, extractors and a good tune on the dyno. I'm aiming for low-130's once I get an aftermarket ecu fitted and tuned. Thats from an internally standard motor, so you can make reasonable power out of them.
I'm not worried about low end power , i race my car between 3000-7000 rpm . the more compression and air/fuel flow i can get the better. This is a full out race car not a street machine.
Thats all well and good, however removing TVIS gains you nothing in the top end, just a loss of torque and hp under 4300rpm. You can NOTHING, only loose it.
i have some cams getting reground to 260's , any tricks for the fuel system or computer upgrades? Would like to do some 272 race cams , but need a better fuel system
