4th Generation 1987 Celica keeps dying

Our 1987 Celica GTS would die after jumping and removing the battery cables. So we replaced the alternator, and it does the same thing. We have checked the fuses and they all seem good. If we rev the rpm to 3000 it doesnt die, but when letting off the gas then it does. Anyone have any ideas?
