Rod Bearings

Ok. So the I have a bad rod bearing in my celica. Its going to cost me $775 to drop a rebuilt engine in after the core refund. I don't exactly have the money to get the rebuilt engine, and don't really think that I am able to rebuild the engine myself. So my question is and I'm afraid I know the answer but, can I replace the rod bearings without doing a whole overhaul on the engine?

Mmm no. You're going to have to rip the motor apart to begin with so your automatically going to replace the headgasket, water pump and timing belt while its out on top of pulling the pistons apart.

Your cheapest and easiest solution would be to find a used 5SFE from someone who has recently swapped and put that in.

Check celicatech, 6gc.net, & mr2oc for used motors. I'm sure someone is selling one.

I dont know about the headgasket but i know i shouldn't have to replace the water pump and timing belt. All 3 of those are new... my water pump had gone out on me about 2 months ago and the engine overheated which caused a valve seal to jam the valve open. So I just had the head off then and had replaced that all then.

Well let me ask this, what are the repercussions of just climbing under the car, taking the oil pan off, and replacing the bearings. Tell me what would happen?

The issue is the rod bearing journal on the crank could have been hammered by the bearing and is now bad. If so, a new bearing will not last very long.

If this engine has counterbalance shafts you will need to remove these before getting to the crank.

Theres a harmonic balancer, pretty sure it's the same thing.

If you replaced all that stuff then your OK.

IMO you should really have it looked at by a professional, in case there is internal damage.
