Question 91 Celica st, unexplanable stalling.

Hey,
I have a 91 Celica st with 160,00 miles. It recently developed a problem which no one can figure out. the issue occurred about a month ago it started losing power while i was driving, (RPM's dropping and almost cutting off) for the recored not when I gave it gas it seemed to happen randomly. More recently she started cutting off and wouldn't start back up for a couple hours. Ive had a number of people give me there opinion on it but none of them were right. One very odd thing she's been doing is the temperature gauge will jump up to hot then drop back down to cold when its trying to cut off, I'm not sure if that even relates to the same problem but it might. The car is at a machanic now and has been for a week he cant figure it out so if anyone knows what it is PLEASE let me know.

thanks

Frien had the same problem in his 02 Sentra SER Spec V. The anti-theft system was triggered from before he had the car. It caused his to be at the dealers 12 times in 18 months! don't think that would be your issue though since I have an ST....... Anyway, I was just saying that it might however, be something with your ECU. But, honestly I am not all that sure. Just a possibility. Hope for your sake that it is just a sensor somewhere. I would test the ECU if you can afford to by finding a Celica with a 4A-FE at a junker. Rob it for the ECU and pop it in your car. Try to drive and see if you get the same problems. If so then that obviously ain't it. I hope if you go through that, that is the issue and it gets fixed. Good luck. Keep me/us posted.

P.S. make sure to disconnect the battery before even touching the ECU, I have seen crazy things happen from sparks and static discharges. So, becarful.

think i've figured it out

The ground to the computer was loose. I think i fixed it and it has now developed a new problem while it idles the rpms drop so low it almost cuts off and then jump up way to high. Still working on it though the engine is strong and the body is nice its just got a few issue's.

PS: my original post says my celica has 160,000 miles its actually at 142,000
