Celica Eats Halfshafts
I have a 1994 Celica ST 1.8L stock hp etc daily driver. I have changed out the right hand half shaft 4 times as of today and the left shaft 2 times (once unnecessarily turns out it was the right). So basically the right hand shaft keeps tanking.
The first replacement shaft I got at NAPA was bad and I had to take it back immediately, next one was good for 30,000. Then it went out again, and I switched to CarQuest. First shaft lasted 4 months, next shaft was bad immediately but I drove it for a month, now today I'm replacing that.
So obviously the manufacture process is a little crappy, but I don't think I should be going through this many shafts. My only thought is there's too much axial play with the shaft, but the factory book specs 2-3mm and that's about what I have. The noise is clunk, clunk under acceleration which indicates excessive axial play in the inner joint. The only other thing I could think of would be the transaxle bearings, but I can't see those going, plus I heard it's suppose to be a constant growling sound.
Anyone else ever experience this?
One more note: the re-manufactured shafts that failed all lacked the dynamic dampener - the one that went for 30,000 had it.
I want to blame it all on the manufacturer, but I'd like to be done w/ changing them all the time.
