1981 Celica 22r Help!!!

Hello all!

1981 Celica 22r. Replaced head gasket and timing chain. Started motor ran for 1/2 hour. ran great. Shut it down for the night, came out next morning cranked it over and POP. pulled the valve cover 3 intake valves stuck open. Pulled head again. 3 valves hit the pistons and bent them. Removed all valves. Had head cleaned. Installed new valves. Reinstalled head. Started ran great for an hour. Let sit overnight and hit the key the next morning same thing. this time only one valve. Removed head replaced valve. Reinstalled head. This time added tranny fluid to the oil and ran for 2 hours. Let sit overnight. This time turned over by hand made 1/2 revolution and it hit. Removed valve cover #3 intake valve stuck open.

Sorry for the long story just trin to get everything in the first round.

I am stumped, the valve guides have been cleaned. New intake valves on all 4. Flushed engine.

Can't understand, ruuns great when first fired, let it sit and valves stick open.

Any ideas woould be greatly appreciated.

Did you make sure the cam gear drive pin was in the hole?

Is the timing chain tensioner too loose?
A loose tensioner would allow the chain to jump a tooth or two and throw your timing way out.

I know your pain.
I bent some valves on a fresh engine two years ago.
Turned out the cams were custom ground offset to the timing notches and I had to learn the proper way to set cams instead of relying on the notches.
But this was different to your problem.

Yes pin is in the hole.
Has new tensioner.

Engine runs great until you shut it off and let it sit overnight. It's when it sits the valves stick.

I had a couple vw's that did that. the problem was caused by running ethanol gas. Because gas made with corn is like sugar based. What kind of fuel are you burning?

Obviously the timing is changing somehow.
Set the timing correct and run it like you did before.
Then let it sit overnight again.
Then remeasure the timing.
Then turn it over by hand.
Finally remeasure by hand.

Hopefully the 2nd or 3rd timing measurement will be off.
In which case it will the timing chain jumping teeth or a sprocket or gear rotating when it shouldn't be.

Is there any crud getting between the cams and the valves.
Or perhaps in the springs.
Are some of the valves closed when they should or are they all open a bit 100% of the time.
If you have double valve springs then maybe the inner and outer springs are binding on each other.

I'm clutching at straws but what else could it be?
