Hello there & greetings from Malaysia. I'm new here & hoping to learn more from you guys. I don't have a Celica but I'm using the 3S-GE Beams engine from a Celica ST202 & was wondering if any members from this forum's using this engine.

I don't know much about the 3S-GE either but I do remember that the ST162 Celica coupe and the ST162 Corona coupe were practically identical.
I guess the St150 Corona would be very similar to the ST162 underneath.
Was the 3S-GE an easy fit?

Hi Stepho,

I don't know much about the ST162 Corona because we don't have that model in my place.

This is actually my second 3S engine. The ST150 Corona originally had a 1S (1800 cc) carburatored engine. Then about 7 years ago, I dumped in a 3S-GE from the Celica ST183. The engine mountings were identical except for the gearbox mounting had to be moved a little forward. The ones on the rear of the cross member was also moved a little. Other than that, everything was done without much mod.The most difficult part was to make the dashboard fit into the Corona body.

This second transplant was more difficult than the previous because the Celica ST202 is overall bigger in dimension than the ST183. So making things fit into the Corona was kinda nightmare ! So other than the engine & gearbox mountings remained untouched, almost every other parts won't fit. Even the radiator's bigger & taller. The exhaust manifold is only a few millimeters away from the radiator. The fans from the ST202 could not be used because of their size. Old fans from the ST183 has to be used.

The dashboard was the the major issue. That held up the project the longest. So to simply put, it's much more challenging than the first project.

It just doesn't make sense because when we first look at it, it was anticipated as a plug & play job; that is until we got our hands dirty...

You're most welcome, mate & thanks for the link but they're basically model specific; Celica to be exact. Mine's a Frankenstein; so to speak. So don't think my freak will fit in.

I had a 3S-GE in my 87 Celica GT. As I'm in Canada, I have noticed variations in the naming of the engines between here and the US. Seems like we're deprived North of the boarder when it came to Toyota giving us the little extras. The US appears to have got all the good models, ect.
As far as I know, the 3S-GE or the 5S-GE is all we have up here when it comes to 4th and 5th generations. Then we go to the inline 6's. I loved my 3S-GE. I sold the car with 363,000kms on it. It still ran great. The motor seemed bullet proof. I have a 92 GT-S right now with the 5S-GE. But you know, I think the 3S would've beat my 5S from mid to high end. Maybe.....

The Beams is actually my second swap. The first swap I did was a 3S-GE from a Celica ST183 GTR. That was back in 2001. I totally agree with you that they're trouble free. I've never had any problems with it. It has clocked about 250 000 kms. I wanted the Beams only because it was more powerful.

I've never seen a 5S-GE in my country, all we had was the 5S-FE found in the Camrys. Celicas were never brought in to our country by the authorised Toyota dealership. It was only brought in as private imports.

Aolteach, do you still any pix of your 5S-GE ? I'd appreciate it if you could show them to me because I've never seen one before. It's be an eye-opener for for. Thanks.

No 5S-GE, only 5S-FE. 3S-GE is in 4th gen GTS. 3S-FE in GT and below. 5th gen and 6th gen Celica GT, GTS has 5S-FE.
No BEAMS in Canada. Love to have a blacktop but cost too much.

You're right. Sorry. I had GE and FE twisted in my head. Too many letters to remember sometimes.
My 92 is a 5S-FE and 87 was a 3S-FE.
