i was thinking that the computer controls that..srs is the system right? Like if you put your brakes on heavy i think it should grab.

It won't lock doing it that way. The seatbelts lock due to lateral forces like braking, etc. Pulling quickly will not lock them. They are also not computer controlled at all in older vehicles like yours.

If memory serves me correctly, there is a pendulum inside that will only engage the locking mechanism under set deceleration, such as an impact. I've had several older domestic vehicles in which the seat belts keep tightening while driving, which is very annoying.

the seat belts have to be level and the are sensitive to the quick movement of the belt or braking hard...... the seat belts i have installed would lock up if you held them at an angle or upside down...... i have seen a few lock up to where you can pull them out... but not all of them.... kinda weird!

I'm telling you they get f'd up in a celica (atleast mine did) go in a empty parking lot accelerate and slam the brakes and try not to headbutt the steering wheel.
