Oil loss

My bro bought a 2000 celica gt, 1zz-fe with 130,000 miles on it. When he first brought it to me, I checked it out. Stock engine, not a rebuild. Oil level was on low. So I topped it off, and even put a bit more over full since it was more than halfway it's life span and will burn oil. Told my bro to put a piece of cardboard under where the engine is to see if it leaks. Anyways a week later, he told me that there was no leak present, check the oil level, it was at the half mark on the stick. WTH, one week, one litre gone, no leak? I highly doubt an engine can burn that much oil in a small amount of time. Can you guys come up with anything, I'm stumped...

can be leaking from the valve cover somewhere right onto the exhaust manifold.... meaning it will only leak with the engine is runing and the exhaust would burn the oil off possibly unseen.......
