It wouldn't be worth it to convert your current engine. It would cost just a bit more to swap in a complete FI engine. If you convert, you'll need the intake manifold, injectors, fuel rail, cylinder head, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, FI computer, TPS, throttle body, and alot of other little parts, and sensors that I can't think of right now.
I'm a first gen owner (1977).
The 22R is easy to make go harder but it depends on how serious you are and how much you want to spend.
If you want mild then try raising compression with a 20R head, then add a set of cams, Weber 32/26 carb upgrade (or EFI) and a high flow 2.5" exhaust.
If you want truly wild then start with a turbo 22R-TE block from a Tacoma, change the cam, change the turbo, add an aftermarket computer, bigger injectors and bigger exhaust.
Unfortunately the turbo path is expensive and the 2 options are so different in the details (different cams, different pistons, different exhaust, etc) that you can't gradually progress from one to the other.
Luckily they are interchangeable, so you could start with an NA engine and drive that for a while, upgrading it as time and money allow. In the mean time, you could slowly build a turbo 22R-TE as time and money allow. When it is ready, sell the NA and drop in the turbo engine.

Yea thats true. Hmmm Well I think ill just go turbo then :-)
To run a 22r/re reliably turbocharged gets pretty expensive. Of course, it all depends on how much power you're actually aiming for. You have a carbed 22r. I'd say you're better off just keeping it naturally aspirated. There are a lot more options for mods with the 22r than there is for the 22re. Do some research. If you figured just because your car is old it must be a 1st gen. Then its pretty clear you have a lot to learn before you can make a decision like engine swaps, turbocharging and fuel injection conversions.
Im certianly not new to cars. I most just work on Acura/Hondas tho. This is the first toyota I have ever had and I figured it was the first year that they made them
Beware that the 22R-TE doesn't make a huge amount of power in stock form (more of a high torque engine).
But it's freshly reconditioned and he throws in a Garret turbo, so it's a good basis to make something really good with.
You would still need to upgrade the fuel system (high pressure fuel pump, bigger lines) and the exhaust but otherwise it is a drop in replacement.
Naturally, if you make really serious HP then you need to upgrade the gearbox and diff.
Here's a few more engine options to think about.
It was originally meant for first gen Celicas but the engine stuff applies equally well to third gen Celicas. http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/celfaq.txt
