warms up and dies.. help

I've got a buddy with a 92 toyota celica with the 2.2L and auto tranny.
It runs great if you just let it sit for a couple days and start it up. But after about 4-5 minutes it dies. Like the electricity dies. Power windows don't work, gauges die off and only the hazards come on. Try to start it.. no go. It cranks but doesn't turn over.

If you let it sit for a really really long time, it will start again. 4-5 hours. but it will just die after 5 or so minutes again. Runs great. Fly up and down the freeway no problems for all of 5 minutes. Then nothing.

Any ideas? Common problems?

it seems to lose everything electrical except for the hazards and brake lights. Basically, it stops working. Things that work when the key isn't in, still work, but that's it. Anything that gets activated with the key doesn't work. No windows, no radio, no gauge readings, nothing that has to have the key on to work.
But since the brake lights and hazards and headlights work even when the ket isn't in, those items still work when it dies.

The car runs like a champ until it gets about 5 minutes in, then it just goes out. Any ideas on where to start?
