Help me please...my 91 Celica GT is sluggish

I just bought my first toyota...a Celica GT last night and it seems a little sluggish. If you push the gas a little, it goes slow then speeds up almost as if a turbo were installed but not as strong of a pull obviously, and on the freeway, its a little difficult to pass other cars. My girlfriends Escort Zx2 beats it, honestly. Its not very responsive. Car has had a recent tuneup from the guy I purchased it from...any suggestions? I dont know if he did the air filter or what parts he used as a tuneup. I know these cars arent fast by far, but I know theyre not this slow either. Any help would be appreciated! mdebo@hotmail.com

Oh and by the way, the check engine light isnt on, but I dont even know if that works as I dont know how to test that. Thanks.

Automatic or stick?

If it's automatic, you may need to add tranny fluid.

Check fuel filter, might need replacement.

Do a compression check. If the motor has never been rebuilt, it might be time since its 17 years old.

Lastly, every other Celica, except the AllTrac and the GT-S (lift), have always been slow and goes just as fast as a Corolla or a 4cyl Camry.

i recommend doing a full tune up yourself, never know if the seller was just saying it.

could be a spark or fuel problem, or compression

Diagnose the check engine light. It may have quite a bit to do with the problem. Do not tune it as others have suggested until this is checked out.
