I don't have a figure but I would be surprised if it was very high.
The 22R came in non turbo (22R, 22R-E) and turbo (22R-TE) forms.
The turbo form had extra webbing inside the block to strengthen it because Toyota didn't think the normal block was strong enough.
The 20R is very similar to the non turbo 22R, so it's unlikely to be strong enough.
Also, the 20R only came with carburettors.
Turbos really are much easier (no pressurised carbs to worry about) and the instantaneous reaction of the computer helps against detonation worries.

Much better to start with a 22R-TE.
You get both EFI and turbo.
It's not a very powerful turbo in stock form but it is a much better foundation to build something much more powerful.
Upgrade with aftermarket turbo, cam, ECU, injectors and exhaust.

i was just curious because someone had mentioned a turbo for a stock 20r, supplied by LC engineering. apparently it was only meant for about 10 psi and i guess they thought it could handle at least that much. but thank you for the info!

i was planning on keeping the car as original as i could, but i guess i could do the whole 20r-22r hybrid. personally i like carburetors, it is more simplistic and more fun to work with.....anyway with the more substantial block, i think i could give it a little boost!

I would trust LC Engineering because they specialise in these engines.
They can be pricey but I have never heard of any complaints about their quality.
Just don't be tempted to boost any higher than what they recommend.

Don't forget to give it a bigger exhaust.
2.25"-2.5" should be enough for mild boost.

If you buy the 20R turbo kit it will probably also fit the 22R.
That means an easy upgrade path in the future when you have more money/experience/time.

Then it would seem to me that iif LC recomends 10 or less psi, as long as i have a blow through carb i should be able to use any turbo as long as i stick with the recomendations. Or should i just go with then LC turbo and not even bother with others?

LC do a lot of design and testing before they sell a kit.
I would trust the 10 PSI figure on one of their kits because the kit would include any little tricks needed for reliability.
They would also have a proper match between the engine, the impeller and compressor.

I would not trust 10 PSI on a backyard special cobbled together from odds and ends.
Even if it doesn't kill itself, a home brew effort will probably drive like a dog on three legs.
