Temp gauge 88GT convertible

Hi everyone.

I just picked up an 88 Celica GT convertible for 850 bucks on craiglist. Its got a new paint job (red) and has about 153 K on it. Ive done a few things to it already but one problem ive been unable to fix is the temp gauge. It was working fine for a few weeks, then became intermittent then quit. I replaced what I thought was the temp sensor (a one wire sensor near the distributor) and the gauge worked, then quit again after a few days. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Problem fixed

My coolant level was just low enough to cause the gauge not to register. Added coolant and the gauge works fine.
