Starter and flywheel

I just put a JDM 3sfe engine into my 88 celica gt, they were essentially the same. I just had to use my intake, throttle body, etc. The only thing I couldn't use from my old engine was the flywheel. My engine had a 6 bolt crank and the new engine had a 8 bolt crank. So I got the right flywheel and they looked about identical. The new one was maybe a 16th of an inch thinner at the teeth. Anyway now I have everything together and when I try to start it the starter just spins. Do you think I just have bad luck and the solenoid went out in the starter, or is there a difference since I changed the flywheel? Any help would definitly be appreciated. Thanks

Well I've gotten a little farther on the problem but still have an issue. After peeking in on the starter I can see that the starter is spining and coming forward like it should. The problem is apparently the different flywheel I needed, the 8 bolt instead of 6 bolt, is about an 1/8 to 3/16 of on inch smaller in diameter. So does anyone know if I can just change the gear on the starter to a bigger gear? Or is there a different starter I should be using, maybe from a different year? Any help would definitly be appreciated. Thanks

Sorry to say but it would be better just putting the right flywheel on.
I know it sucks doing a job twice but this will alleviate future problems.

If you want to try mix/matching staters. Find out what flywheel you put in and try using the starter for that vehicle.

Goodluck.
