celica motor in my 87 sr5

Ive been having problems finding a crank for my old motor so i got on craigslist and found a new 22re celica motor for $250. i went and picked it up this morning and was lookin at it and noticed a few things were different. my plans were to take the short block from the celica and just put my head on it and go with it since the head off the celica motor needed some thread work. I am wondering if this is possible with the celica piston since they are the dome/full crown top style pistons? If not then I was wondering how much or if any difference is there between the two heads so that my exciting efi and exhaust with bolt right up? the only thing that the celica motor is missing is the timing cover and was wondering if i could just use the one off one of my old motors out of the truck? Any and all suggestions and advice are appreciated.

what year is the donor (celica) eng?

you could take the whole celi long block and swap it in. the only parts you would need to swap on would be the oil pan and pick-up. your intake n exhaust "should" bolt right up.

the only real trouble spot is if the celi motor is the old style -83/4 as the exhaust manifold bolts are slightly different in the center. old style has one bolt and the new style has 2 bolts. but if that is a issue use a older style cast manifold which will still bolt up to the newer downpipe.

as for swapping heads, that also depends on weather or not your celi eng is the old or new style. newer blocks are a lil taller then the old ones and WILL NOT work with the newer style heads, unless you mill down the older block to match the deck height of the newer block. but then you'll develop problems with the piston to valve clearance, and im sure other gremlins will poke up.
