Gen5 1992 toyota celica Compatibility question.

I just finished paying off my 1992 toyota celica gt and have been considering doing a AT/MT swap and I was wondering if the E-153 tranny from a MR2/Toyota Solara fits with little to no extra modifications done. Just wondering before i go get a tranny. Its all in preperation for my 3s-gte swap.

It can fit, depends on which you use. The Solara is easier to put in because it's already FWD while the MR2T tranny, while being a tranverse tranny, is set behind the motor and thus requires increased modification.

I believe both will require hybrid axles. On top of all that, the gearing will be a little long, so your acceleration will decrease. Then, they are definitely more expensive than just putting an S53 or even S54 from a 6th gen.

will the S53 be able to take the beating it will receive from the 3S-GTE engine upgrade and such. i had heard that the celica tranny's were weak in that area and the tranny's needed to be upgraded.

The Celica's tranny will fit and work with the 3S-GTE, but the question is always for how long? For the long run, use a E153 tranny from the MRT. I've seen and heard that the swap is not that hard, just like any motor swap there will be some things need and change to complete the swap correctly.
