Canada 20R/22R engine help

I recently purchased a 2xR engine. My problem is the middle digit in the name is faded away and I cant figure out which one it is. Can someone please tell me how to identify which engine I have.

^ yeah, but so is the 20R.

JR - is the engine together, or is the intake off it, or anything else? No pics? The intake ports on the 20R are round, and the carb has a round opening where the air cleaner fits on.
The 22R has square-ish intake ports and the carb opening has a more rectangular shape to it.

Wow, I thought that all Toyota Blocks where stamped with the Model number in the Block casting on a flat surface for easy identification. Plus you can always take to block part number and call it into a Toyota parts counter to see what comes up within the system. At least it can narrow down the production years for easier reference.

Some of the stamping isn't very clear, which is what I'm assuming is the case here.

Well your information on the type fuel system should help with that ID as you stated earlier. But the Block part number is always the way to make sure via the factory part numbers. Sorry, I forget that these engines are subject to exterior damage due to road salt. Sorry Just moved North from Florida and I forgot about rust and the effects of salt.

I do agree that the part number is the best method. It is unfortunate that the ID pad on the 20/22R's is almost flat and dirt and moisture can collect there. Up here in BC they use a lot of salt, too.

The 22R distributor will fit the 20R, that's not a fool proof method.

Here is a summary of the 20R and 22R and the differences between them.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/eng20r.htm

Quite often the ID number (which should start with 20R or 22R) can be cleaned up with a bit of industrial cleaner.
Or rub it with some fuel soaked cloth (to remove grease) and then some sandpaper (the flat metal becomes shiny while the dark grit stays embedded in the numbers).

Luckily, both engines will fit your '73 Celica.
