I just finished installing a rebuilt engine in my sons 98 Celica GT and had a check engine light on. I had it checked and they told me it was a camshaft position sensor. I have looked in my book and it does not say anywhere in the dang thing to where I can find it. Can anybody help me with finding this sensor? It is a 5spd trans also.
It'a by the top timing belt cover on the firewall side.
I think it's a 2 pin connector.
It's kinda buried in there but you'll see it.
Probably forgot to plug it or swap it back from the old motor.
I was wondering if that was the case. There are 3 wires that come down from between the intake manifold, one is a ground, one plugged into a sensor on the block, and one we could not find out where to plug it in. Thouhgt it might have been an extra plug. I can see a spot on the top there that has a place for a bolt and a dip in the head, but it does not go all the way through, is that where it is suppose to go? Or should the sensor be have a whole to go into the head with no obstructions? Thanks for the reply.
Actually the cam sensor doesn't go down there.
It's more in the area of the top of the head. Close to backing plate of the cam gear.
The 3 wires your talking about are knock sensor, egr vsv, ground wire.

Ok, so I have the ground, and then one wire is connected to a sensor that bolts to the block. I only had one wire hanging left, so that goes to the egr vsv then? Is there anywhere that I can find a picture or diiagram of this area ? The cam sensor would have had to be taken off the old block then right? I didn't have any extra parts, and this one wire was the only one I didn't have plugged in. There is a plastic part of the wiring harness that goes right behind that plate if my memory serves me right, and kind of snaps in behind it. is it under that part of the harness? I will have to check it out tomorrow ahen I have better light, but I thought I had everthing else plugged in. How far away is the egr vsv from the cam sensor? is it possible that I crossed them wires? The engine was running pretty nice, just that one error code.
I believe cam sensor is in the disturbutor.
What's the code? Does the engine crank? Does the code come back if you reset the ECU?
I am not sure what the code is, I had it read at a local auto store and he told me it was the cam position sensor. The engine turns over and runs great. The guy reset the code at the store, and as soon as we started it, the light came back on.
Doesn't sounds right. If ECU is missing cam position, engine shouldn't run or at least run rough.
So you have check engine light?
Anyone know if 98 is OBD2?
I'm assuming its OBD1.
Open the hood. Look for a label with picture of the diagnostic plug. It'll should show a wire connecting 2 terminals. Connect the terminals. Turn key to on, don't start engine. Check engine light will start blinking. It'll blink a few times, wait a bit then blink again. Count all the blinks until it repeat. All the codes are 2 digits. For code 46, it'll blink 4 times, wait blink 5 times, wait blink next code or repeat.

So I am using a jump wire and then get the codes? is it any different then taking it to the auto store and reading the code with a code reader? The first time they read the code i was told it was the Cam Position Sensor. The guy reset the code and when we went to leave, we started the car and the check engine light came right back on. I did not have them read it again, but if it gives the same code I will check it myself and see what it says, or I can bring it back up to the store and have them read it.
OBD use jumper to read error code by counting check engine light flash. There is no code reader.
OBD2 needs a reader to get the code.
I don't know if yours is OBD or OBD2. My 90 GTS is OBD and I know it doesn't has a cam position sensor. Engine is the same, 2.2L 5S-FE. It may has changed in the 98.
With out cam position signal, ECU will have problem timing ignition correctly. Don't think it can even idle.
If you can get the actual code, someone here can look it up in repair manual to see what it is.

I am having trouble finding the egr vsv. Can you tell me a general area to search? do I have to come from under the car?
More on tha passenger side just above the rear motor mount.
You should be able to see it if you turn the wheel to the left and just peek under the intake manifold.
Blue connector 2 wire, 2 vacuum hoses. Held by 12mm bolt.
