Is there a twelve step?

Ok, in a moment of weakness, I bought a car. Price was too good to let sit. I got this...

I paid 500.00$ for it and got a few parts as well. Here are most of the extra pieces I got as well.

I had a friend ask about the cars a month ago or so and he got the
"I am going to restore it someday..." response. Yesterday, out of the blue, he gets a call from the owner. The owner had rethought his position and was willing to sell. I was all too willing to buy. The gentleman I bought them from has owned the white one since new. The brown one was bought as a parts car and that is how I will keep it. The interiors are the same color (tan) and the brown car's is in great shape except for the dash pad. The white car's interior is pretty trashed, except for the dash pad. The owner is a mechanic and runs an import garage so I feel pretty decent about the mechanical shape of the car. Neither runs right now. The brown one he wasn't sure of. The white one ran before being parked and he then pulled the gas tank and drained the lines. He did say that the engine turns over by hand just fine. He also said that he has a ton of parts, new rims, bumpers, body panels, interior stuff, even a low mileage 20R that he would sell me. I have looked the cars over and they appear pretty solid. I know that they will need stuff, brakes, gaskets, etc, but I am as giddy as a school girl, happier than a pig in slop.

Now, I just have to figure out how to tell the wife

Excellent bargain!

Since you're buying lots of stuff for it, consider whether you want to return it to stock condition or upgrade it.
Stock is of course the easiest route.
Modest upgrades aren't too hard but are always a little more involved.

Easiest upgrade is to use the 2400cc 22R engine instead of the 2200cc 20R.
Drop in and enjoy.
Requires the 22R exhaust manifold or an aftermarket 20R/22R manifold.
The 22R-E is an option if you prefer EFI (much smother response).

Brakes can upgraded to Cressida MX73 front brakes (vented disc).
Another option is Corona RT132 struts + Pickup LN106 4 spot callipers + Peogeot vented discs; but those struts are hard to find in the US.

Here are some further options:

Either stock or upgrade will cost similar amounts.
The choice depends on what you want to get out of it.

I actually told the wife last night at dinner. I made sure that she had finished her margarita first She took it quite well and is not really upset. She figured that it was gonna happen sooner or later. Her one request was that I spend equal time working on projects around the house. My plan at first is just a stock-like rebuild to get it up and running. Then mods as funds allow. There is an 83 or newer (wedge shape)celica across the street from me that is just rusting away in the drive way. I have started considering the ease of an engine swap from it. That would give me a decent power upgrade and not kill the gas mileage. First thing is to get it up and running... well, actually the first thing is to take actual possession of them. I have paid for them and have a bill of sale, but it all happened so quick that I have not had time to have them moved. So, I just sit daydreaming making car noises in the meantime

Stepho, thanks for the links, lots of great stuff. Is the classic celica group still active on yahoo?
