01 Celica GTS - Prem, MidGrade or Regular Octane

I'm looking at buying a 2001 Celica GTS w/auto trans & 90K miles. Everything I've read says that premium fuel is required/recommended with the GTS. Does anyone have a GTS and use MidGrade or regular fuel? The idea of buying a car that uses Premium fuel with today's gas prices isn't very appealing.

Seeing how it is high compression engine you should use high octane for optimal performance. If you decide to use lower octane it will decrease performance, via computer settings to retard ignition timing, thus avoiding knock... Let me know if I can help with anything else.

no worries, it wont knock. people think that the slightest change in gas makes a deifference. 87, 89 and 91 are almost the same.

87 and 91 is totally diff gas....as far as i can see 87 has more water based than premium gas therefore it will not help the engine progress power... 89 is mixed grade with premium is not as great but still mix with premium gas

actually the only difference between the fuels is additives. the lower the octane the less additives it has to prevent knocking, fuel doesn't have more water in it seeing as water wouldn't be able to evaporate in the cylinder

^^^^ I agree that 87 oct is not watered down. But how would water NOT evaporate in a cylinder where high temperature combustion is taking place? please elaborate.... Maybe I'm retarded when it comes to physics but I would think, any water present in the engine would instantly become steam and exit through the exhaust valve/s. Exactly like it would during water/methonal injection when being used as an anti detonation measure.

because the speed of your cylinder and you injectors are moving so fast ie rpm's that it doesnt have time to and it slowly builds up

Shuh, no way man! If H20 is introduced into the combustion chamber during combustion, it wil INSTANTLY VAPORIZE and exit with the normal exhaust gasses. It doesn't matter if the motor operates at 100,000 rpm. which is exactly why if you run water/methonal injection you don't drive around with puddles of water just chilling in your cylinders.

This is a different concept but I think that it reinforces my point. http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=467
