Gen5 Gen 5 Celica (5S-FE) Starting Troubles.

Howdy All,
I'm new here and I Recently bought a Gen 5 (1990) Toyota Celica SX Coupe.

I picked my new baby up for $400AU From a friend who just wanted it gone, and the only thing wrong is the engine doesn't start, It cranks fine, Never kicks over.

Now I'll be the first to admit I know shit all about cars, but I WANT to know, Not so I can drag people or "Be awesome" but just because I love knowledge, and cars are beginning to become a real intriguing thing to me.

I had a friend who looked at for a little bit for me, and he got the leads to spark onto a heat cover to check for spark, that was fine, but we aren't sure about the actual plugs themselves yet, and electronically we tested the fuel pump with a Multi-meter and its working fine, so with Spark and Fuel supposedly there I am kind of Unsure how to continue, I'm thinking about just replacing the Dizzy-cap leads and plugs, because worst comes to worst I at least can rule them out. Any other Suggestions ?
Engine is a 5S-FE Stock as a rock. Just had a new radiator installed prior to me buying it.

I know I've probably said something stupid in here so please don't hold back letting me know, the more I know the better, and the only way I will learn is if people Tell/Show me

Thanks,
Nick

you have a crank no start which means you have no to little spark/fuel
so you want to start with the easiest ie electrical start at the plugs make sure each one sparks if 1 or more is not sparking check wires then cap then rotor
if that passes check fuel start at the injectors check to make sure each injector is firing (using a stethoscope is the easiest if you dont have one use a volt meter youll want to check ground side of the injector(the ground side of an injector is the side pulsated to prevent electrical build up, connect red lead to +battery and black lead to ground side of injector)if each check out check fuel pressure( on your fuel line you will find a connection that looks like a valve stem to be simple connect a fuel gauge to it and check fuel pressure. if low pressure check pump if good move to electrical components ie o2, crank speed sensor, maf, map exe.

Gen5

Thanks, the fuel pump seems good but I found the Spark plugs were terrible, worst plugs I've seen, so I replaced them with new ones but when I tried to start it now it doesn't crank, it actually goes "click" like its about to, and then I hear a clearly audible, but not loud, whine like something electrical starting up, and my Negative wire from my battery to the earth point begins to smoke, So I very quickly disconnected the battery. Now I know I didn't change anything electrical when I installed the plugs so I don't know where to begin, I'm doing a thorough check on all the wiring now, But I was wondering if there is anything common this could indicate ?
Thanks again, I'm gonna go fiddle with things till I find it, and check back here every 2 hours or so to see if anyone has anything.

-Nick.
