Have '88 GT w/ 3SFE, doing a 3SGTE swap and have questions.

I have a 1988 4th Generation Celica GT and the engine in it is a 3F-FE and I am doing an engine swap into a JDM 3S-GTE. I am wondering about the year engines! Can a get like a '92 MR2 3S-GTE and swap it into my '88 Celica? I don't know. Plus the transmission in my '88 Celica is an automatic and at the same time of the engine swap I am gonna be doing a tranny swap/conversion to a manual transmission. So in short what type of engine is best and what type of tranny s best for my 1988 Celica GT!

Thanks for your posts.

Wow buddy.... You have quite the ambition. I hope you have the funds to fuel that. May I make a suggestion. If you are going to do all that extra work maybe you should consider selling your current car and buy a celica that is already a manual. It will save you so much headaches. My buddy did a auto to manual swap on a car and his car sucks. I don't think he did something right. I'm sure you are smarter than he is though.

Buy a nice 92' celica with a manual transmission and a busted engine. Perfect situation for you.

I bought a 91' celica with a busted engine for $400 and I now have a car for less than a thousand dollars.

I hope this helps.

Yeah, dont think I can get rid of my 4th Gen. The Celica is my very first car and it has been through so much! I love that celica to death. A AT to M tranny conversion is easy! The only problem I am running into is figuring all of my DEQ and legal abiities of doing a conversion into something other than what was made with my year Celica's. For instance swapping to a 2JZ-GTE.

It can be done but you'll also need the ECU, wiring and all ancillary items.
Question: why put a 2nd gen 3SGTE into a GT as opposed to a better equipped GTS?
(I.E. drum brakes vs disks; power seat; 5-bolt wheels; bigger tires; etc.)

With all costs and time factored in, you might want to just look for an 88-89 All-Trac. They can be found for anywhere from $1500 - $3500, depending on condition and mods. That way, you have an economical GT for DD and another with 3SGTE for performance and fun.

Just my 2 cents....

+1

but if you really got your heart set on the swap, get a drivetrain from a mr2 turbo. The gearbox will work and it'll take everything you can throw at it. especially on a fwd setup it don't matter how much power you make, you'll break traction long before you break the tranny.
