90 Celica GT 5fse engine help...

hey guys... im new to the forum as well as Toyotas... I just inherited a 90 Celica GT (5fse) from my grandma that ran it out of oil and slung a rod thru the side of the block... since I always did the maintenance and repairs on it she gave it to me... so im gonna rebuild it and use as my daily driver... I am more familiar with rearwheel drive v8's than frontwheel drive imports so I need a little guidance...

I am in kind of a bind right now since my s10 blazers v8 died on me... so I need to get this one running so I can rebuild my truck... but I am not sure which direction to go... I dont have the funds for a new or reman engine... I have found a used engine at a local salvage yard and one ebay that might be a possibility but not sure if its gonna need to be completely rebuilt or if I can change out the timing belt and go... If I have to rebuild it are there complete rebuild kits like they have for smallblock V8s or do I have to get the parts individually... also are there any books/manuals on rebuilding these engines?? any help is appreciated...

Might look in newspapers, Craigslist, etc for someone totaling a Celica or Camry (used the same engine). Rebuilding even if doing it yourself is still costly unless going on the dirt cheap. Best to find a decent used engine that can be swapped with just a timing belt belt change (precaution), etc.

Check out Chilton and Haynes manuals, your local library may have manuals for checkout.

Keep in mind engines after around 1995 started to incorporate crank and cam sensors mounted on the front of the engine, plus other subtle differences.

Get the one from local junkyard for cheap and rebuilt it. Toyota has rebuilt kit with all the seals and gasket you need for less then $300. I'll highly recommend Toyota kit because of all the metal gasket it include. If the bearings are good, just reuse them. You should (but not required) change piston rings. Get a shop to hot tank the block to clean it up. Hone the cylinders and put in new rings. Becareful with all the valve shims. Mark them all so you can put them back in right place. Unless you want to check and reshim them. Change timing belt and waterpump. Check power steering hoses for cracks and change them while engine is out. You don't want to do them with engine is in. Worse then timing belt change.

Doesn't matter which 5S-FE 2.2L you get. Any year will do. Only use the head and block and keep all electrical from your old engine. If you're not sure, use the old one. If they look different, use the old one.
