92 Celica GT 5S-FE - No Spark

Hi gang,

I am a relative noob with Toyotas, so please bare with me here. I have a 1992 Toyota Celica Liftback L4-132 2164cc 2.2L DOHC (5S-FE), and I just replaced the timing belt and the water pump. I am certain the timing is dead-on, but now I have no spark. What did I miss? Do these things have a crank sensor? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, as the wife is losing her patience with not being able to park in the garage.

Thanks very much,

Jim

If you have no spark, your timing could be off. Did you move the distributor?
Not sure if the 5SFE has a crank sensor or not, I'm not very familiar with the 5th Gens.
Visit us at www.celicatech.com there are generation specific forums and you'll get more help over there. Good luck.

Nope, I never moved the distributor, and I'm now dead certain the timing was and is now spot on, but still no spark. I also confirmed that the 5S-FE does not have a crank or camshaft positioning sensor. I did some more searching on the Web and came upon a wiki post that said the 2.2's are famous for spitting out coils on high-mileage engines. The poster even had the proper specs for voltage and impedance, so I got my trusty meter out and sure enough, mine failed the same two tests his did. He also stated that his has gone through two in 300k. So I picked up a new coil yesterday, and I'll yank the distributor out tonight and install it... we'll see what happens.

I tried going to http://www.celicatech.com, but there was a page there that said "Too many of you are accessing the site right now, so I shut it down." I just tried again right now, and there is a server error page showing. I'll try again later.

Thanks for the reply, too.

Jim

I'm positive the 5S-FE has neither. I've called a very reputable dealer here in St. Louis (Lou Fusz... they rock), and they don't list a sensor for either cams or crank. Same results at Auto Zone. I did pick up a coil the other day, but my energy level is zero after DJ'ing a wild neighborhood party last Saturday night... LOL. I'll get back on it tonight and post results when I back the POS out of my garage.

No external crank or cam sensor for 5th gen, 100%. They're in the dissy.

UPDATE: 92 Celica No Spark

The Celica is fixed and running great. Turns out the coil went bad at the exact time I decided to do the timing belt... which is always fun.

Thanks for your input and help...
