AE92 Major staring issues on '92 5sfe

The short version, it isn't starting. The starter blew on me last week so I picked up a new one from partsource for about $120 replaced it and now its making a new noise. I pulled off the backing plate and asked my wife to turn it over, the starter was engaging fine but it still sounds like the crank isn't turning.

Today I'm going to take off the timing cover and check it out. I rooled the car up and down the drive way in 5th gear to check the fly wheel, it looks fine and was turning on start up. I'm thinking its the crank/flywheel connection

Any idea's or suggestions would be appreciated.

well your crank is connected to your flywheel by 7 bolts and if your flywheel turns when its cranked and when you did the roll test id say its still connected
if you take a prybar try turning the flywheel to hear if the crank is moving also check for flywheel play

Make sure the starter teeth are engaging the ring gear. That the new starter gear is the same at the old.

With the cover or starter off rotate the engine by hand and look at all the ring gear teeth for damage.

Are you the original owner of the car?

mandiees: I've only had the car for a year or so

toyomoho: The starter is the same and engaging fine, checked all the teeth and no signs of damage

hatchy: while I was testing it I never though to check the fly for free play will do as soon as I have time (still haven't looked at timing)

Thanks for all the ideas, will keep you updated as best I can.

btw, is this an interfearance engine? I can't remember

First off I would change the starter with a factory re-manufactured. I have NEVER EVER seen a flywheel come loose at the crank on a 5 speed. It is possible that the gear teeth are damaged but on a 5 speed this was super rare. I believe it is the aftermarket starter causing this. I have had this happen many times before.
This is not an interference engine. Now you have a no start; clarify, was it a no start before or a no crank? If the t-belt broke the engine would spin over super easy. Now if it is a no crank there are other things possible.
BTW there are 6 bolts not 7.
