Question 2SE Starved for Air

'86 Celica GT, w/ 2SE, Automatic Trans, New Timing Belt w/ 1800 miles on it, new Water pump, new Distributer -Last Week it began Idling rough, surging and sputtering, checked the timing and adjusted idle per manual, changed fuel filter. Changed the Plugs and installed new Remanufactured air sensor. Checked the Throttle Position Sensor, as well as all the Water Temp sensors, and the Air Valve. The only way it will run smoothly is if I leave the air filter box lid off, cracked about 3/4 to 1" open. It runs too fast then and is using too much gas like this. I can't figure it out. The "Check Engine" light is not on, but I tried to pull codes anyway, no code... What have I missed? Anybody have any clue what is going on?

Problem Solved

I always learn something when I get in these predicaments;

It's the simple stuff that will get you. A couple of basic things to remember folks;

1) Always start with the obvious and simple things
2) Always search the Forums on Toyota Nation to discover the Simple things

Found several threads on Idle problems...folks said look at the Air Induction hose leading from the Air Flow Sensor to the Throttle Body, check for cracks in hose letting un measured air in...so back to the car and wallah, two large cracks in th folds of where the hose articulates around to the Throttle Body. So off to Pull-a-Part, found one off of a Camry with a 2SE that fit perfect. The Celica is back to running like a champ.

Afternoon and Fuel to go to Pull-a-Part $20
Finding an Air Induction Hose $4
Using the Search Feature on Toyota Nation Priceless!
