clutch issues

i got a 86 st replaced the clutch, once the car is warmed up, the clutch grinds in 2nd. but only when i down shift. Someone told me tranny issues but not sure. Also is sluggish in 1st but i think that has too do with either my timing or fuel system. When i let off it back fires. Anything will help because i need to sell to buy a truck for work. thanks for looking.

the grinding issue is a problem with the syncros. the other problems is a timing issue with the engine

Did you change the fluid in the transmission? Put in the right fluid?

Do i have too rebuild the trany to replace the syncros? thanks for the advise and we replaced the trans fluids, had the same thing happening before the new clutch went in. I will get the timing looked at maybe off a tooth or two. Thanks again Drew.

You do have to disassemble the transmission to replace syncros. I had been told, but I haven't try it myself or experience it first hand, Redline manual transmission fluid can help with minor sticky syncro problems in manual transmission.
