buying my first celica

hi guys this is my first post on this forum, if i buy this car ill probably be posting alot more questions.

This will be my first car ever if i decide to buy it!

its a 94 celica with a 5 speed manual.

my neighbor wants 1500$

its clean as far as cosmetics go, but its needs a new radiator(around 120$)

and a new thermostat.(already purchased just needs to be installed)

we took it to the mechanic today, and he said there was no fluid leaking into the engine or leaving the exaust.

but he said we cant see anything else until the radiator and thermo is replaced...

is this a good buy?

any response would be appreciated.

As long as your mechanic checked it out, sounds like a good deal. Did the car overheat? Is that why it needs a rad and t-stat? Make sure there are no signs of coolant + oil cross contamination. Look under the oil filler cap for a milky or cremey coloured film. Is there any sign of an "oil slick" when you check the coolant?

so what happened was, when i first checked out the car, the only real problem was that the rad was cracked..

so that meant that at somepoint it overheated..

i had the mechanic check it out, he looked at everything he could and did a couple of test, but since the radiator was cracked there was 1 or 2 things he couldnt check.

as far as he could tell, there was no fluids from the rad leaking into the engine.

so we determined since one hose connected to the rad was hot when the car was running and one was cold, was that the thermostat was broken and causing pressure to build up in the rad and crack..

so today i picked up the rad and tommarow im getting it put in, if this is the only problem im going to buy the car... so keeping my fingers crossed that its the only problem

Just try to ensure the head didn't warp when it overheated. Good luck, let us know what happens.

Still a good buy.. Worse that could happen is a engine swap!

Hell, I hope you bought it. I'd take a 94 with a clean body for 1500 bucks any day...no matter what trim level it is. BTW, what trim is it? GT? GT-S?
